Marrickville Council and reverse evolution

The local council of the inner Sydney suburb of Marrickville, have evidently passed a “boycott Israel” motion.

Sam Iskandar (ALP)  Victor Macri (Independent) Fiona Byrne (The Greens)   Cathy Peters (Greens)  Laura Wright (ALP)  Morris Hanna (Independent)  Peter Olive (The Greens)  Mary O’Sullivan (ALP)  Marika Kontellis (The Greens)  Dimitrios Thanos (Independent) Emanuel Tsardoulias (ALP)

Among all the problems in Marrickville, Sydney, NSW, Australia and the world,  the hypocrites on the council led by someone green behind the gills called Cathy Peters, have fixated on their fetish, Israel.

Hopefully, this “passed motion” will result in the illustrious council of Marrickville boycotting all their computers (with Intel),  and refusing to use their mobile phones, (since they were pioneered by Motorola)… now wouldn’t that be a good thing!

.. back up the tree, boy and girl councillors! … while we join Bob Marley in singing about hypocrites here

  1. Thanks for your comment, Daphne. While I agree with your straightforward response, I was particularly interested in a comment from the Marrickville Mayor, Fiona Byrne, who supported the anti-Israel resolution.

As reported in the Dec 24 Australian Jewish News from an article from Joshua Levi and Gareth Narunsky, “Marrickville Mayor Fiona Byrne said that while she was not au fait with the situation in the Middle East, the policy was important. “I don’t know the full ins and outs of the situation because I’m not an expert, but I support a peaceful solution, two-states or otherwise,” Counciller Byrne said. “Unless people start to take some action, whether economic or cultural, to put some pressure, then we can’t achieve any kind of change”.

I find it revealing that the Mayor admits that she is “not au fait with the situation” and that she doesn’t know the full ins and outs of the situation because she is not an expert. Yet despite her admitted lack of knowledge or expertise, she feels comfortable to support a boycott.

Is that really the way a Mayor, a councillor or a regular Joe, should approach any problem.

A previous blog item http://localhost:8888/jca/?p=2088 referenced an excellent piece from “Divest This” about the reasoning behind a food coop decision to reject a BDS initiative “they determined that making a politically-oriented boycott decision required them to have expertise in (not just strong feelings about) the political situation under consideration. And they needed to be prepared to open the door to any other political boycott request and give each the same level of consideration they gave an Israel boycott.

Taking these two points to their logical conclusion would require the co-op to dedicate significant time and effort to vetting their shelves based on a broad range of political matters over which the board would have to have strong understanding (both about the political issues themselves, and the opinions of the membership). In short, they based their decision not on their personal feelings over who was right and who was wrong in the Middle East, but what was in the best interest of the organization and its members.”

The above argument would be relevant to Marrickville Mayor Fiona Byrne, who admits to a lack of expertise in the Middle East but is prepared to support a one sided statement. I doubt whether decision making in a state of ignorance would work well in any matter of council…e.g. “the sewerage isn’t flowing well .. I am no expert but we’ve got to do something .. let’s cut this pipe and see whether it helps.”

I agree that the “Divest This” comment is very relevant. Thanks for pointing out the blog, which I now look at regularly. A recent column from the same blog http://www.divestthis.com/2011/01/manufacturing-dissent.html is also instructive in that it shows how the BDS crowd in Marrickville are very happy to cause antagonism and facturing in their community target; other people who may have other causes, are more circumspect about stirring up dissent.

  3. The nation of Israel has made a greater contibution to humanity than both the Palestinians and the Greens put together. If this lunatic Mayor wants to truly boycott Israel, here is (partial) list of Jewish contributions that she will have to forfeit:

Prozac, Valium, The Polio Vaccine, Radiation,Chemotherapy, the Artificial Kidney Dialysis machine, the Defibrillator, the Cardiac Pacemaker, Vaccination against the deadly “Hepatitis B” virus, the Vaccinating Needle, Laser Technology.

Discount Stores, Pawn Shops, the Shopping Cart and the Ready-to-Wear Clothing Industry. Levi Jeans, Lipstick, the Ballpoint Pen, Contraceptives, Instant Coffee, Television Remote Control, Traffic Lights, Scotchguard, the Flexistraw.

Google, the Wire Transmission Facsimilie (FAX) , the Microphone, the Gramophone, the Microprocessing Chip, Optical Fiber Cable, Laser, Cellular Technology, the Videotape Recorder.

Monotheism, Psychoanalysis, the Theory of Relativity, the Weekend (the Sabbath). The Atomic Bomb, the Thermonuclear Bomb, Genetic Engineering, the Nuclear Chain Reactor, Virtual Reality.

Hollywood, the Sit-Com, the Long Playing Record, Woodstock, Sound Movies, Videotape, Color Television, Instant Photography, Holography.

Drip Irrigation, Scale Model Electric Trains, the Pager, the Walkie-talkie, Refrigerated Railroad Car, High-vacuum Electron Tubes, the Incandescent Lamp, Kodachrome Film, the Blimp, the Adding Machine, Stainless Steel, Tapered Roller Bearings.

At least 178 Jews have been awarded the Nobel Prize, accounting for 23% of all individual recipients worldwide between 1901 and 2008. Yet, they only make up 0.25% of the world’s population.

The Jews have done a lot to improve our quality of life. How does it benefit us to turn them into enemies?

  4. As a local resident of Marrickville I was appalled that council should waste our time and money. I wrote to all councillors with only 2 having the decency to respond- so much for community participation. I was told it cost the council NOTHING to investigate this – does this mean the councillors investigated this themselves and didn’t use council staff – I think NOT!

I was also told it was about reducing the Misery caused by Israel – my comment to this is that focus on ALL countries that expolite women, children and boycott those – use the principle not the politics. The councillors boast about accepting diversity and yet they single out one group and as we know if people in power ligitimize and sanction such a focus there will be unwanted and determental effects for that group. Hey Cathy – stick with the ethos of the 70’s – make peace not war!
