Hands up, anyone who’s surprised the Fairfax press is plugging the Human Rights Council farce on the flotilla

In for a penny, in for a pound.

The Fairfax press, via todays Sydney Morning Herald, is furiously plugging the Human Rights Council’s latest attack on Israel, graced by yet another look at Paul McGeough’s plethoric face.  “expert panel’ really!  But, after all, if it’s good enough for the Guardian,  its certainly good enough for our intrepid SMH lads.

Robin Shepherd takes the BBC to task for a similar biased summary here.  As he notes, “There is just no way out of this for the BBC. This isn’t journalism, it’s political propaganda. And since that violates the BBC’s own charter, the journalists and editors should be held to account.”

While the SMH touts the “expert panel” Robin Shepherd reminds us  “The UN Human Rights Council is dominated by dictatorships, many with appalling human rights records. For example, members include China, Cuba and Saudi Arabia. This is crucial information since it goes to the credibility of anything that the Council does or says. Any trained journalist would know that such information must be included in any fair report. To omit it must, therefore, be a matter of deliberate choice. In this case, the BBC must have known that to relate such information would nullify the report’s impact as a device for defaming Israel. And that is why they omitted it.”

Also, “there is video evidence (it’s on youtube for goodness sake!) that activists armed with steel bars, clubs, and knives mobbed the Israeli soldiers the moment they landed on the ship in an attempt to maim or kill them. No professional journalist would omit such information. And since anyone with even a cursory knowledge of what happened would be aware of such facts their omission must have been deliberate and part of a clear policy of promoting an anti-Israeli agenda.”

Israel slammed the biased, politicized, extremist approach of the council here,  while MK Zoabi, in a remarkable display of the freedom of opinion in Israel, “demands the soldiers indictment”.

Fairfax is quick to pick up the lead from the Guardian, but I wonder if they saw the article Arabs harass female ‘peace’ activists; left silences victims where  Gil Ronen writes “Two activists have exposed a disturbing phenomenon that they say is an open secret within the “peace camp”: female “peace” activists are routinely harassed and raped by the Arabs of Judea and Samaria with whom they have come to identify. They say the phenomenon has gotten worse lately and that many foreign women end up as wives of local Arabs against their will, but cannot escape their new homes. An activist notes “It appears that there is a gap between the radical-leftist feminist theory about the active resistance to the occupation of the Territories, and the stuttering self-annulment in the face of the violent conquest of women.”

Now there’s something that doesn’t fit the narrative and needs to be brushed under the carpet.

On the other hand, the Aussie football finals are on, not to mention the state of the bathrooms in New Delhi for our Commonwealth Competitors .. so the SMH is probably just sawing away to their little coterie of Israel-haters waiting for their latest fix.
