Data from the rejectionist Palestinians

A survey here from pollster Stanley Greenberg in conjunction with the Beit Sahour-based Palestinian Center for Public Opinion and sponsored by the Israel Project, an international nonprofit organization that provides journalists and leaders with information about the Middle East.

According to the Jerusaelem Post, “respondents were asked about US President Barack Obama’s statement that “there should be two states: Palestine as the homeland for the Palestinian people and Israel as the homeland for the Jewish people.”  Just 34% said they accepted that concept, while 61% rejected it.

Sixty-six percent said the Palestinians’ real goal should be to start with a two-state solution but then move to it all being one Palestinian state.

Asked about the fate of Jerusalem, 92% said it should be the capital of Palestine, 1% said the capital of Israel, 3% the capital of both, and 4% a neutral international city.

Seventy-two percent backed denying the thousands of years of Jewish history in Jerusalem, 62% supported kidnapping IDF soldiers and holding them hostage, and 53% were in favor or teaching songs about hating Jews in Palestinian schools.

When given a quote from the Hamas Charter about the need for battalions from the Arab and Islamic world to defeat the Jews, 80% agreed. Seventy-three percent agreed with a quote from the charter (and a hadith, or tradition ascribed to the prophet Muhammad) about the need to kill Jews hiding behind stones and trees.

The data were based on “an intensive, face-to-face survey in Arabic of 1,010 Palestinian adults in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip”

Hmmm!!  Doesn’t provide too much confidence, although it’s good to see the Palestinians speaking their mind, albeit hostile.
Some other comments are here here here  and something about the pollster, Stanley Greenberg.
The evidence that two thirds see a 2 stage solution rather than a 2 state solution, should provide a clear warning to the Israeli’s to not weaken their position to enable a 2 stage solution.. one way to do that is to remember the immortal lines “never give a sucker an even break”  especially if there is only one wicketkeepr position – the great Ian Healy  and the magnificent Adam Gilchrist.

  1. Thankyou for this important report on what Palestinians really think.
Two stages – not two states.
It is so tempting to hide behind wishful thinking — perhaps some well-meaning leftists should read it also. No doubt they would argue it away. To paraphrase an old concept: Never let the facts get in the way of a good “narrative”.

And to think – I used to be a ‘moderate’ leftist, until reality came and knocked me on the head, in the form of the 2000 Intifada following Barak’s amazing peace deal, rejected by Arafat, and the final knock on my head, which was after Israel withdrew from Gaza and they turned the hot-houses into missile launching pads – sort of a reverse Isaiah – ‘turning swords into ploughshares’.
