Arafat, the KGB and Romanian intelligence

Among the labrynth that makes up Middle East politics, the links between the PLO, the KGB and Romanian intelligence are important to appreciate.  As a first step, it’s important to realise that Israel’s defeat of Egypt and Syria in the 6 Day War was a disaster for the Soviet Union, which it tried rapidly to counter.  The Soviets  used the Palestinians as an example of a national liberation movement that the Soviets supported elsewhere, and also attacked Israel as part of their anti-Western and anti-American strategy.

Lt Gen Ion Mihai Pacepa is a high ranking Romanian intelligence officer who defected to the U.S. in 1978, and has been an important source of knowledge from that time. For this biography see Wikipedia
