A devout Catholic says “Shouldn’t we all be Israelis”

Kyle-Anne Shiver provides an excellent reponse to the international attacks on Israel here.

As she writes regarding the media attacks on Israel regarding the Gaza Flotilla,  “Having watched a Western press grow more and more willfully blind and downright anti-Semitic over three decades greatly increased my skepticism. Seeing my American president blink, blink, and blink again while blathering more inanity about irrelevancies, unable to discern right from wrong, brought me to the brink of gut-wrenching nausea. What has happened to us? The West, I mean, and more specifically, America?”

Shiver continues –  “Instead of “peace activists,” the soldiers — not drones or missiles or mechanized artillery, mind you, but real men, sons, brothers, husbands, fathers — were met by an army of savages wielding steel pipes, who overwhelmed the soldiers and beat them without mercy. The savage gang was fired upon, and nine of them were killed. It was called an Israeli-perpetrated massacre.  And I daresay there is not a single American adult who would not defend the actions of the IDF if the men being beaten were among their own sons, brothers, husbands, or fathers.  A Chicago police officer attempting to inspect a car trunk for illegal drugs who is surrounded by a gang and beaten with steel pipes certainly has the right to use his gun and depend upon his partner to do so. An American soldier disarming people by law in the wake of Katrina, if met by a gang wielding clubs against him, would fire in self-defense. Would we have the same difficulty condemning the real law-breakers? I don’t think so.

Figuring out who is right and who is wrong in this situation is not hard stuff.”

She adds  “understanding the Israeli position as the only morally defensible one in the region is not difficult. It’s the kind of elementary morality that any good parent hopes to have instilled in his children before they reach middle school.  So again, I ask myself, what has happened to us as a civilization?  Why are the Israelis having to spend precious time and energy trying to convince the rest of the world of the justness of their cause? A cause that is simply about surviving in peace while surrounded by historical throwbacks to the 7th century?”

Shiver is extremely critical of Pres Obama’s failure to speak out clearly  (this could certainly apply to our Australian government leadership as well)

and concludes  “shouldn’t we all be Israelis now? Yes, we should.”

….

Meanwhile, Robin Shepherd, another non-Jewish defender of Israel, has written a brilliant article demolishing an antagonistic review of a new book by Melanie Phillips.  The article includes some memorable line regarding the review by John Crace.

Examples include –  “Crace cannot deal with Melanie Phillips’ arguments, so he goes for her personality. But he can’t even do that with any panache. The “Mad Mel” line has got to be one of the most hackneyed lines in Lefty British journalism. To use it is pretty much like going to get your forehead tattooed with the words: “I’m a dimwit with nothing original to say”.”

Shepherd also says “Here’s how my Oxford dictionary defines the word bigot: “A person obstinately and unreasonably wedded to a creed, opinion or ritual.” But that’s John Crace! (in fact that’s the Guardian and most of Britain’s liberal Left). Just look at his writing: packed full of lies and distortions (about Israel mainly); lies and distortions obstinately and irrationally held to regardless of evidence and contemptuous of countervailing views; lies and distortions which form part of a ritualised anti-intellectual agenda which has sunk its claws deep inside the new British establishment.  The real problem for John Crace is that he’s an intellectual pygmy taking on a giant. If he played the arguments rather than the person making them, it’d be a bloodbath and at some level he, like most of Melanie’s critics, probably knows it. That’s why he writes in the way that he does. Poor thing can’t help it. But what a state to be in…”
